Checking Criminal History in Russell County
Russell County has no one search that joins every criminal record. Start with the free public computer at the Russell County Judicial Center when a court result is the goal. The Circuit Clerk keeps Circuit Court felony matters and District Court misdemeanor files, along with felony preliminary work. Russell County's official court pages also route requests to the clerk. A city ordinance or qualifying city misdemeanor may remain with Phenix City Municipal Court. Recent custody starts with the jail, while an agency report comes from the sheriff, city police, ALEA trooper, or other office that made it.
Before a search, collect the full name, date of birth when lawfully available, spelling changes, event date, arresting agency, and any report or case number. Then follow the record rather than relying on a name alone. Russell County criminal history often changes between intake and final judgment.
- Choose the court, arresting agency, jail, or repository record that answers the question.
- Use the free Judicial Center terminal or the paid Just One Look portal for a court case.
- Match names against dates, court level, and case or report numbers before treating a result as the right person.
- Compare the initial charge with the filed charge, disposition, sentence, and present custody status.
- Order certified court copies or a fingerprint-supported self-review when an official record is needed.
Russell County Criminal Records Split Four Ways
An incident or arrest report describes what the arresting agency says occurred. The Russell County Jail creates a separate booking record if a person enters local custody. The Circuit Clerk then records the charge that is filed, each court event, and the disposition. ALEA Criminal Justice Information Services links fingerprint-supported arrest cycles to outcomes reported by courts. None of these Russell County criminal records replaces the rest.
The split matters when facts conflict. A booking label is not the final charge, and custody is not a conviction. A court dismissal may not yet appear in the repository. Start with the product closest to the fact being checked, then compare the next source in the chain.
| Need | Russell County channel | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Incident or arrest facts | Originating agency | The agency's account and initial allegation |
| Current local custody | Russell County Jail | Booking and custody at a point in time |
| Filed case and outcome | Circuit Clerk or Municipal Court | Court action, disposition, and sentence |
| State criminal history | ALEA personal CHRI review | Fingerprint-linked Alabama arrest cycles and reported outcomes |
Alabama Official Background Checks
Alabama does not offer an unrestricted public name search for a statewide rap sheet. A person who wants to review their own Alabama Criminal History Record Information uses the ALEA fingerprint process. The application requires identity details, a valid photo ID copy, classifiable fingerprints from an authorized law-enforcement agency, and payment by cashier's check or money order. The base review costs $25, and an added copy costs $5. ALEA advises allowing at least four to five weeks. The Alabama Background Check System, often called ABC, is a credentialed subscriber service. It is not the public self-review route. The ALEA Criminal Records Identification Unit explains how fingerprint files support the state repository.
The state unit's page helps distinguish repository criminal history from Russell County court images, police reports, and jail custody data.
The ALEA personal criminal-history review instructions set out the official fee and submission requirements.
That process is best for self-review of a fingerprint-linked Alabama record, while the Russell clerk remains the source for the full local case file.
Russell County Criminal History Fingerprint Trail
A Russell County arrest can begin an arrest cycle after the booking agency records identity data and takes fingerprints. ALEA associates that cycle with an Alabama state identification record. Prosecutors may change the accusation, and the court reports the later disposition. A missing or late disposition can make the state entry look unfinished even after the Russell County case has ended.
For a correction, compare the ALEA self-review with a certified case action summary or disposition from the Russell Circuit Clerk. A challenge filed within one year should name the disputed charge or outcome, the agency or court, why the entry is wrong, and the result believed to be correct. Official proof should be attached. Federal history is separate. The FBI electronic personal-record request system uses current fingerprints and a subject-only request.
The FBI route can reveal federal identity-history entries, but it does not provide the pleadings and court images in a Russell County criminal case.
Criminal Record Types
Russell County criminal history is a group of records, not one file. The sheriff or police department writes an incident report. The jail records an intake. A complaint or indictment states an accusation. Court staff preserve the docket, orders, plea, judgment, sentence, and payment history. ALEA maintains fingerprint-linked repository data. ADOC, ABPP, and the sex offender registry each cover a narrower form of custody, supervision, or registration.
Restricted files remain a distinct class. Juvenile and youthful-offender records, full personal identifiers, protected victim details, active-investigation material, and expunged records may be withheld or redacted even when another part of the matter is public.
- Arrest and booking records: show the alleged offense and local custody, not guilt.
- Criminal court records: show filed charges, events, outcome, and sentence.
- Repository CHRI: joins fingerprint-supported arrest cycles with reported dispositions.
- Warrant records: identify court orders for arrest when disclosure is lawful.
- Custody and supervision records: cover jail, prison, probation, or parole status within each agency's scope.
Russell County Jail Records Trail
The Prentiss L. Griffith Detention Center at 307 Prentiss Drive books people for county law-enforcement agencies. Its free current-custody feed has a general search box and sort control. A profile can show name, booking date and time, age, physical descriptors, inmate ID, arresting agency, charge code and description, jurisdiction, classification, and bond data. It does not show a court result.
The feed appeared stale during the July 2026 research review, with its newest visible booking dated months earlier. When a Russell County custody record is absent or looks old, call the jail at 334-298-8621. Then ask the named arresting agency for its report and check the clerk after charges are filed. That source chain separates an allegation, a booking, a filed charge, and a court result.
The ADOC Inmate Search covers state prison rather than the Russell County Jail.
A person held before trial or serving local time may not appear there, so local and state custody searches should not be treated as duplicates.
Inside a Russell County Criminal Record
The fields depend on the record creator. A Russell County jail entry is built for custody. A court file is built to document prosecution. ALEA criminal history is built around fingerprint-supported arrest cycles. Read the field label and source before drawing a conclusion. A statute code describes an alleged or adjudicated offense, while a disposition states what the court did with that charge.
Russell County criminal records also change over time. A prosecutor may file a different charge from the arrest label. Bond can change. A case may be dismissed, tried, or resolved by plea. A sentence can include confinement, probation, costs, or restitution.
| Name and Identifiers | Names, aliases, birth data, physical descriptors, and an agency or state identifier where disclosure is allowed. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and Booking Data | Agency, date, intake charge, booking details, bond, and custody status. |
| Charges and Statutes | The alleged offense, code citation, level, amendments, and court-filed count. |
| Disposition | Conviction, dismissal, acquittal, nolle prosequi, or another recorded result. |
| Sentence | Confinement, probation, fines, costs, restitution, and other court terms. |
| Custody or Supervision | County jail, state prison, probation, or parole status within the holding agency's scope. |
- Disposition
- The court's result for a charge.
- Nolle prosequi
- A prosecutor's formal choice not to continue a charge at that time.
- Docket
- The dated list of events filed in the case.
- Capias
- A court order directing that a person be taken into custody.
Russell County Warrant Records Stay Private
Russell County does not publish a complete warrant database. The county magistrate states that an arrest warrant is not public until it has been served. A person who thinks a warrant may exist should appear in person at the Russell County Sheriff's Office, 305 Prentiss Drive. The County Warrant Magistrate works by appointment through the Circuit Clerk's main number. Phenix City Municipal Court and its Fugitive Unit handle separate city matters.
The sheriff's Most Wanted page is only a selected public list. It is not proof that no warrant exists. A lawful warrant record may identify the issuing court, issue date, warrant type, charge, related case, and bond. Sealed and juvenile matters stay restricted. The official Russell County Most Wanted interface should therefore be read as a notice tool, not a countywide warrant search.
A missing name on that screen does not clear a warrant; confirmation must come from the issuing court or law-enforcement office.
Public Access Laws in Alabama
The Alabama Open Records Act begins with a citizen's right to inspect and copy public writings, but other laws can limit release. Russell County custodians may redact juvenile data, youthful-offender material, protected victim details, full identifiers, active-investigation content, and expunged records. Repository CHRI has its own controlled dissemination rules. Public access never means that every field in every Russell County criminal record must be released.
Use the channel set by the custodian. The Russell clerk offers a free terminal and a copy form. Phenix City publishes police-report methods. The sheriff has no verified online records form or fee schedule, so callers should ask who holds the exact item, how to send a narrow request, whether ID is needed, and what costs apply.
Key Alabama laws:
Ala. Code §36-12-40 gives Alabama citizens a right to inspect and copy public writings unless another law applies.
Ala. Code §36-12-41 addresses certified copies and payment of lawful fees.
Ala. Code §41-9-601 penalizes false-pretense access or unauthorized communication of protected criminal-offender information.
Ala. Code §12-11-30 defines Circuit Court felony and appellate jurisdiction.
Ala. Code §15-27-10 limits use of records after an expungement order.
Russell County Criminal Records at Public Counters
The Russell County Judicial Center at 501 14th Street in Phenix City is the main counter for Circuit and District criminal case records. The lobby computer provides case information and images at no charge during clerk hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. Court Security lists broader building hours, and all visitors pass a metal detector. Cameras, tape recorders, weapons, chemical spray, scissors, chained wallets, nail files, and laser pointers are among the prohibited or seizable items.
Remote copy requests use one court form per search. A computerized search costs $10, while an archive search costs $25. The first 20 copied pages cost $5, with each added page at $0.50. Certification is $5. Mail requests require a money order; in-person requests may use cash; personal checks are not accepted. The clerk warns that staffing fell below 55 percent after budget cuts, so mailed research may take much longer than a terminal search.

Sealed, Expunged, and Restricted Records
An Alabama expungement petition for a Russell County charge is filed in the criminal division of the Circuit Court where the charge was filed. Eligibility turns on the charge, result, waiting period, completion of duties, other convictions, and statutory exclusions. A dismissal alone does not answer the question. The file may show a dismissal with prejudice, no bill, acquittal, nolle prosequi, program completion, or another outcome with a different rule.
Start with a case action summary and certified disposition. Compare those papers with an ALEA self-review if the state entry is the concern. Current Form CR-65 states a $500 filing fee per arrest or incident, unless a court grants a hardship waiver. The petitioner must identify the arresting, booking, and holding agencies and serve the required offices. The prosecutor has a 45-day objection period under current court guidance. After an order, check the Russell County case record and ALEA CHRI again because downstream updates may not be instant.
Juvenile files, youthful-offender records, sealed material, victim identifiers, and exempt investigative facts have separate limits. Expungement also allows narrow criminal-justice or statutory access in set circumstances.
Russell County Criminal Records Cross Custody Lines
Custody and supervision records answer different questions. Russell County Jail documents local detention. ADOC Inmate Search covers people in Alabama state prison. The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles handles adult probation and parole through state field offices, while a sentencing order at the Russell clerk shows whether probation was imposed. Juvenile intake and probation use a separate court channel.
The ABPP Phenix City Field Office at 1521 5th Avenue serves Russell County. Its phone is 334-298-6521, and weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern with a noon closure. ABPP has no public name roster. A status check should begin with the sentencing order, move to ADOC if prison is involved, and then go to the assigned ABPP office for any limited information it may lawfully release. Probation is court-ordered community supervision. Parole is conditional release from prison under state authority.
Note: A jail, prison, probation, or parole result describes only the scope and time covered by the office that released it.
Russell County Criminal Records by City
Russell County has only two incorporated municipalities. Census Vintage 2025 estimates place 31,594 Phenix City residents in Russell County and 341 people in Hurtsboro. Phenix City also extends into Lee County, so a city address alone does not prove which county court holds a state case. Ask where the event occurred and which agency made the record. Hurtsboro has no verified police records portal or current municipal case search, which makes a call to Town Hall or the sheriff the sound first step.
City police reports and municipal matters begin at the city level, while state misdemeanors and felonies move through Russell County District or Circuit Court. The two city cards match the local record routes rather than adding an unincorporated place.
Phenix City Criminal Records
31,594 residents in Russell County. Police records and municipal cases use separate counters in the Public Safety Building.
Hurtsboro Criminal Records
341 residents. Town Hall is the first verified channel when the report or municipal court custodian is unclear.
Russell County Criminal Records Reach Federal Systems
Federal criminal records sit outside the Russell County court system. Russell County lies in the Eastern Division of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. PACER holds federal dockets, the FBI provides subject-only Identity History Summaries, and the Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal custody from 1982 forward. None is a substitute for a Russell County Circuit or District Court file. The Middle District of Alabama court identifies the federal district that covers Russell County.
Federal filings belong in that court's docket system even when the event or person has a Russell County connection.
The Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator is the official federal custody search.
Use the Russell jail for local custody and ADOC for Alabama prison custody, since the federal locator does not cover either group.
